About the Hello, Hanzi Book Series
Published by Sino-Culture Press and developed by The Editorial Committee of the “ZiChuang” Cultural Project of ASI Global, the Hello, Hanzi Book Series is a five-volume collection designed to introduce global learners to the richness and relevance of Chinese characters in modern life.
The series focuses on:
-
high-frequency characters commonly used in daily life
-
authentic social and cultural contexts
-
practical communication needs of learners living, studying, or working in China
The book series is intended for university students, young adults outside China, and those preparing to study in China, particularly learners with no prior exposure to Chinese characters (Hanzi). By combining visual storytelling, AI technology, and cultural context, the series offers an intuitive and engaging entry point into Chinese characters from a global perspective. Instead of teaching characters in isolation, Hello, Hanzi introduces them through meaningful situations that reflect real language use.
Five-Volume Structure
The Hello, Hanzi series is organized into five progressive volumes, each focusing on a different stage of daily communication:
-
Book 1 – Basic Life
Introduces essential characters through common everyday situations.
-
Book 2 – Social Integration
Focuses on characters used in typical social and institutional contexts.
-
Book 3 – Social Interaction
Develops communication skills for social relationships and public settings.
-
Book 4 – Workplace in China
Introduces characters and expressions used in professional environments.
-
Book 5 – Chinese Culture
Explores characters connected to traditional and contemporary Chinese culture.
Hello, Hanzi Book 1
As the first volume of the series, Book 1 introduces learners to Chinese characters through everyday situations and basic life experiences.
It covers five units—Pictographic Characters, Self-Introduction, Shopping, Food and Dining, and Transportation—focusing on characters and expressions commonly used in daily communication. Starting with the most fundamental characters, the book supports early-stage learners in building confidence, developing essential language skills, and laying a solid foundation for future learning.
You can now find Hello, Hanzi Book 1 on the following platforms: Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, Thalia, Smashwords, Angus & Robertson, Vivlio, Fable.

Hello, Hanzi Book 2
Book 2 centers on the theme of Social Integration, focusing on high-frequency situations that foreigners often encounter when first arriving in China. The book is organized into five carefully designed units—Preparing to Enter China, Currency Exchange, Hotel Accommodation, Renting a Home, and Studying in China—each reflecting authentic experiences of living, studying, and adapting to a new environment.
Key Highlights of Book 2: Better Aligned with Real Needs, Deeper Cultural Insight, More Structured Grammar Support and Enhanced Digital Learning
The Hello, Hanzi series follows a clear, learner-centered framework designed to help readers understand, remember, and use Chinese characters effectively.
-
Character
Learners explore the form, structure, and basic meaning of each character. Every character is paired with an illustration to support visual learning. Pictographic characters are illustrated based on their original forms, while non-pictographic characters use images that connect form and meaning. Learners are also encouraged to create their own illustrations to strengthen memory.
-
Culture
Characters are presented within social and cultural contexts, showing how written forms relate to daily life, values, and institutions. Key stages in character evolution—such as oracle bone script, bronze script, small seal script, and both traditional and simplified regular script—are introduced to help learners see how characters developed from images into abstract symbols.
-
Application
Characters are practiced through real-life scenarios and task-based activities, supporting functional language use in everyday communication.
