From July 24 to 26, ASI Global co-sponsored the 2025 3rd International Conference on Design Science (ICDS 2025), which was successfully held in Shanghai, China. Organized by the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the event brought together over 150 scholars, researchers, professors, and students from China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, and beyond.

As a key co-sponsor, ASI Global played an important role in supporting this exciting academic gathering, strengthening ties between academia and industry, and advancing the interdisciplinary development of design science. ICDS 2025 featured a comprehensive program of keynote speeches, invited talks, panel discussions, oral presentations, and a youth session, chaired by prominent academics such as Professor Zhinan Zhang, Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Discussions explored intelligent design methodologies, the impact of emerging information technologies on design science, and the integration of technological innovation with evolving design paradigms, while participants also shared reflections on the essence and future direction of the field, informed by both research and engineering practice.

We were delighted to see our teaching faculty members, Professor George Malliaras and Professor Soummya Kar, actively participating in ICDS 2025, contributing their expertise to advance academic exchange and innovation in design science.

Professor George Malliaras Delivering Online Opening Remarks

During the opening address, Professor George Malliaras, Prince Philip Professor of Technology in Department of Engineering at University of Cambridge, delivered a video message underscoring the significance of ICDS as a catalyst for intellectual exchange and paradigm innovation in design science. He noted that the conference provides a unique forum where researchers from diverse disciplines can share breakthroughs, challenge existing frameworks, and explore novel methodologies.

Professor Youbai Xie Delivering Opening Remarks

Following this, Professor Youbai Xie, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered the opening keynote on the knowledge flow theory of design science, which describes how knowledge is generated, transferred, and applied throughout the design process. He analyzed its connections with knowledge sharing mechanisms and the broader goals of cultural and intellectual development, and emphasized that integrating artificial intelligence into this process can significantly enhance design competitiveness and improve designers’ ability to apply knowledge effectively in practice.

Professor Soummya Kar Delivering Keynote Speech

In the keynote session, Professor Soummya Kar, Professor and IEEE Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University, presented on Stochastic Optimization Under Heavy-Tailed Noise: New Advances in Training Large-Scale Machine Learning Models. His talk explored the integration of AI with design methodologies and applications, offering fresh insights into how advanced computational techniques can inform and transform research in design science.

ICDS 2025 Highlights
